Perfume Brands Exposed!

I like to smell good but I have recently discovered some of my favourite perfumes are pretty toxic :-( So I'm on the hunt for some great organic ones and am keen to hear any recommendations you may have?

Did you know... Within our the most popular perfume brands at least a dozen secret chemicals not listed on the label this is according to a new laboratory analysis by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Campaign partner Environmental Working Group assessed data (collected by an independent laboratory) on 17 best-selling fragrances and found they contained an average of fourteen chemicals not listed on their ingredient labels because a loophole in the law allows companies to claim fragrances as trade secrets. 66 percent of these "secret ingredients" have never been evaluated for safety, meaning we have no way of knowing what they'll do to our health... eeek!

What do we know already...These perfumes contained an average of ten unlisted chemicals each that are associated with allergic reactions like asthma, wheezing, headache and contact dermatitis, and an average of four chemicals known to be endocrine disruptors, which impair normal hormone development and have been linked to a range of health issues including sperm damage, thyroid disruption and cancer.
Exposed Perfume Brands:
Here's the full list of products tested and the number of secret chemicals found:
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue = 7
Clinique Happy Perfume Spray = 9
AXE Body Spray For Men - Shock = 10
Jennifer Lopez J. Lo Glow = 11
Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce (for men) = 11
Victoria's Secret Dream Angels Wish = 13
Halle by Halle Berry = 13
Calvin Klein Eternity (for women) = 14
Bath & Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom = 14
Calvin Klein Eternity for Men = 15
Old Spice After Hours Body Spray (for men) = 16
Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio (for men) = 17
Britney Spears Curious = 17

Chanel Coco = 18

So my question is how do we find good reasonably priced healthy alternatives? I'm interested in any suggestions for good organic perfume brands because other than Jo Wood and Pacifica I'm struggling a bit to find any that smell as good as my old favourite Bulgari's Rose Essential!

Any thoughts?
Love,
Sarah x

Organic Beauty on a Budget....

Rock'n'Roll - Rose & Sandalwood Bath Salts

Creation time: 5 mins

Ingredients:
Rose Essential Oil
Sandalwood Essential Oil
Base Oil (Almond, Jojoba, Olive)
Rock Salts (your choice)

You will need to buy a small bottle of organic rose and sandalwood essential oil (or you can use lavender if you'd prefer) they will cost anywhere between £5-15 each depending on the quality and will last for ages. If you want a good quality organic oil I suggest using one of the following:

http://materiaaromatica.com/
http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/essential-oils
http://www.florihana.com/en/essential-oils.html

You can use any of the following salts: Himalayan Bath Salts, Epsom Bath Salts, or Grey salts from Brittany. All of these salts are packed full of magnesium and are really good for soothing aches and pains, bathing in them for 20-30 mins can help Rheumatism and boost the immune system.

I often mix a few drops (8-10) of the rose and sandalwood oil with a base oil, such as Jojoba or Almond and pour this on to the salts for them to absorb. I like to add dried rose petals as in looks so pretty in the jar and feels luxurious to bathe in rose petals.

I then pop them into a glass jar any type will do as long as it's clean and leave them by my bath. I'll add a few spoonfuls to my bath each evening and it's really soothing, moisturizing and smells great!  They make fab christmas gifts too.

If you'd like to buy the equivalent Ila do some lovely organic bath salts very similar for £48.

Is Rose Hip oil a 'miracle' beauty product?

Hey Folks,
My new found love is Rose hip oil. I really think it is a bit of a miracle product!  For those of you who don't know much about it Rose hip oil is packed full of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, rose hip oil is a healing oil that has the ability to deeply nourish and balance all skin types.

What is it?
Rose hip oil is a fruit oil extracted from the hip of the rose. The hip is the fruit that is left after the rose has bloomed and the petals have fallen. It is a very fine oil that can be easily absorbed by skin and doesn't leave any residue.

Why is it so effective?
The essential fatty acids it contains include omega-3, 6 and 9. They are really important for not only our general health but for the health of our skin as they help the skin cells regenerate and repair damaged skin tissue.
It is these essential fatty acids in rose hip that rehydrate dry, sun damaged skin cells and improve the appearance of  burns, scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.

Why do I think it's such an amazing product?
Well I have used it constantly to minimize my scars after my operations and it has been far more effective than bio oil (which is cheap but full of crap!). I also now use it most nights on my face (See today's star organic beauty buy for my current favourite).
My skin just soaks up the oil when I put it on at night and I've been waking up in the morning glowing!  It is a very light oil so using it is similar to using a night serum and you only need a couple of drops.

It's not cheap but I implore every to go and buy a small bottle if you can. It is one of the best beauty investments I've made this year.

These are the two brands I like the best but let me know if you know of any other good ones?

Kosmea (£29)

Trilogy (£16)

Both brands are certified organic and ethically sourced.

I would love to hear your thoughts/ opinions on Rosehip Oil and whether or not you like it as much as I do!

Eminence Stone Crop Whip Moisturizer £44. Fab organic skincare product. It is full of healing and repairing nutrients while preventing pigmentation and age spots. Stone Crop increases the resistance of skin ageing. It's key ingredients are stone crop, lemon, bioflavonoids, lavender, corn germ oil and bio complex (vitamin A, C, E, coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid). Within a couple of days of using this my skin is radiant , dewy and plump. It is the best moisturizer I've used in a long time and smells great! Downside for me is the packaging (like the fact it's Eco friendly but feels a bit too overtly 'green' and the product colour- that is green too!)
All in all massive thumbs up. I'm giving it a 9/10.

Celebrities top organic skincare brands.

Gwyneth is a big supporter Pangea Organics Facial Cream. Aside from the cream itself being earth friendly, all packaging is made using a zero waste process. Best of all, you can soak the box in water, and then plant it to grow medicinal herbs. We love Gwyneth Paltrow’s green eco work and her stellar eco-friendly record. http://www.pangeaorganics.com
Julianne Moore a Burt’s Bees Supporter Burt’s Bees and Julianne Moore team up to promote “natural”. Lots of companies claim to be all natural, but when you read the labels (which you must do) the list of scary, crazy chemical ingredients is enough to turn you green – literally and figuratively.http://www.burtsbees.co.uk

Over the years, she’s been able to develop some relatively complex products, using naturally occurring ingredients such as vitamin liposomes, yerba protein, and enzyme-vitamin C, in addition to fruit oils, herb extracts. http://sukiskincare.com

Eczema, Psoriaris, Roscea and Dermatitis...Are there really any miracle cures out there?

Skin disorders such as the above are so common and there are so many different theories to what causes them, be it allergens in skincare products, food, hormones, stress, pollution...

I have suffered from both perioral dermatitis and eczema in the past. In fact only in January was my dermatitis so bad that it covered my whole chin. I've been on a constant quest to find miracle products/ cures and really have struggled to find anything effective (my dermatitis disappeared in late spring when the sun came out, I know the sun helps my dermatitis but constant sun exposure isn't good for your skin and i'm pretty sure it'll be back come the winter).
My boyfriend suffers from psoriaris, currently he is using around 6 different steroid creams that the doctor has prescribed and I'm pretty sure none of them are going to eliminate it... We have tried various organic/ natural routes, skin tonics from the Organic Pharmacy along with their 'Ultra Dry Skin Cream' to no avail, chickweed creams, aloe vera gel with lavender and teatree (pretty effective but didn't totally eliminate the psoriasis), omega supplements and acidophilus I even tried apple cider vinegar in a desperate attempt to get rid of my dermatitis! Stinking to high heaven! yuk!

Have you found or heard of any effective skin treatments out there for these common skin disorders? What products have worked for you?

I'd really love to hear your thoughts,

Love,

Sarah x

Phthalates. Why they matter.

What are they?
Phthalates are a family of plasticizer chemicals used as additives in cosmetics, fragrances, hair sprays and nail polishes.

What are they found in?
Phthalates are endocrine disruptor chemicals, which can impair reproduction and development, alter liver and kidney function, damage the heart and lungs, and affect blood clotting. And despite their confirmed impacts on human health phthalates are rarely identified in ingredient lists as they are often listed under the catch-all of “fragrance" (which can be classified as up to 200 different types of chemicals).

Male Fertility ‘Damaged’ by Chemicals in Cosmetics & Environment

Male Fertility ‘Damaged’ by Chemicals in Cosmetics & Environment

Palm Oil. Why it matters.

A great video by Greenpeace targeting DOVE for their continued use of palm oil and the impact it is having on our environment.

Indonesian and Malaysian Palm Oil Production
Some environmental campaigners claim that in 15 years, 98% of the rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia will be gone unless drastic action is taken to find ways of producing sustainable palm oil. The expansion of oil palm plantations has also given rise to social conflicts between the local communities and project proponents in many instances.
In particular orangutan habitats have been threatened by palm oil production. In 1900, there were around 315,000 orangutans. Today, fewer than 50,000 exist in the wild.

SLS. Why it matters.

What is it?
SLS and SLES are detergents widely used in shampoo, shower gel, soap, toothpaste and are used as foaming agents that cut through oil. Beauty manufacturers use them because they are cheap.

What are they known as?
They can be known as the following: sodium lauryl/ laureth sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium salt sulphuric acid, monododecyl ester.

Side effects
SLS and SLES is penetrated into the skin and cannot be metabolized by the liver. It can cause skin rashes, scalp irritation and scabs and strip the natural shine from hair.

Why it really matters?

The World Health Organisation have stated these compounds are often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which are a "probable human carcinogen." However, no research has conclusively proven that SLES or other similar detergents cause cancer. If you generally avoid carcinogens, consider finding alternatives to SLES in the products you choose to purchase.

Skin Matters

I love beauty products, I've used them religiously all my life and for many years whilst in a stressful but decent paid job in television I would pride myself on buying high-end beauty products to match a glamorous, fast paced, city lifestyle. Like so many women when my pay cheque rolled in it was reward time! I'd be off to buy myself a new Chanel perfume, Dior lipstick, pop for a manicure or smother myself in a good fake tan.

In 2009 that all changed. I found myself in a lot of pain and struggling to work, I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis, I’ve had four operations since to try and minimize this chronic illness that is a primary cause of infertility in women. Living with endometriosis catapulted me into a new way of living. I stopped drinking, started eating healthy and even started doing yoga!

I came across an article one day on how chemicals in skincare products have been proven to exacerbate endometriosis and can even cause various cancers through their toxic ingredients. I went straight to my bathroom cabinet, and to my horror, I found out nearly every beautifully packaged, heavenly scented product I owned was packed full of toxins, carcinogens and hormone disruptors that I was absorbing into my skin everyday (on average women use about 15-20 different products a day). For me, it was a stark realization - I was in a state of total ignorance rubbing toxic chemicals into my skin on a daily basis.

I started to avoid products with parabens and detergents (sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulphate) and DEA and TEA, which react with nitrates to become carcinogenic nitrosamine, and are known to disrupt the endocrine system.

I began to look for pure, organic skincare products and have stuck to using them and aromatherapy since.

However, as a girl who likes to feel pampered and indulged every once in a while I have struggled to find products that do the job as well as some of my old favorite (but toxic) brands. The formulations either don't smell as good, are the wrong consistency or the homemade/ethnic style packaging is a total turn off..
In the last year or two I have noticed a distinct difference in the products coming on to the market, there are now a few organic skincare products that feel good, smell great and look cool (still not enough of them if you ask me...)

I will be reviewing these as well as sharing various interesting articles and facts about skincare products, essential oils and how to look and feel drop dead gorgeous by using organic beauty products.

Come on folks,  it's time to liberate our skin!

Love,

Sarah x
