Phthalates. Why they matter.

What are they?
Phthalates are a family of plasticizer chemicals used as additives in cosmetics, fragrances, hair sprays and nail polishes.

What are they found in?
Phthalates are endocrine disruptor chemicals, which can impair reproduction and development, alter liver and kidney function, damage the heart and lungs, and affect blood clotting. And despite their confirmed impacts on human health phthalates are rarely identified in ingredient lists as they are often listed under the catch-all of “fragrance" (which can be classified as up to 200 different types of chemicals).
