SLS. Why it matters.

What is it?
SLS and SLES are detergents widely used in shampoo, shower gel, soap, toothpaste and are used as foaming agents that cut through oil. Beauty manufacturers use them because they are cheap.

What are they known as?
They can be known as the following: sodium lauryl/ laureth sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium salt sulphuric acid, monododecyl ester.

Side effects
SLS and SLES is penetrated into the skin and cannot be metabolized by the liver. It can cause skin rashes, scalp irritation and scabs and strip the natural shine from hair.

Why it really matters?

The World Health Organisation have stated these compounds are often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which are a "probable human carcinogen." However, no research has conclusively proven that SLES or other similar detergents cause cancer. If you generally avoid carcinogens, consider finding alternatives to SLES in the products you choose to purchase.
